Tax Help for Older People
TOP is a registered charity that provides free and independent professional tax advice to people who are about 60 years of age and older, and whose household income is up to around £15,000 per year.
The TOP service is provided by volunteers from the tax profession, who give their time and expertise, either over the telephone or at a surgery. TOP Volunteers have an Inland Revenue approved PIN which enables the Volunteer to speak to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on behalf of the client if necessary. This offers significant benefits over similar advice schemes.
Queries can be dealt with over the phone via the TOP lo-call help line, 0845 601 3321, but for preference we use surgery premises for personal and confidential interviews. These TOP Surgeries are held in partnership with Age Concern, CAB or other voluntary or statutory bodies but the service remains independent. Age Concern Sheffield is now available to host TOP Surgeries. However, initial TOP contact should be via the lo-call telephone number.
TOP Tax Volunteers are not allowed to advertise the firm for which they work. They act independently of both the firms for which they work and from HMRC, offering a completely confidential service, free of charge to eligible clients.
Further information about TOP can be found on the website of Tax Volunteers on www.taxvol.org.uk 03/03/2006
