Role Description

Main purpose: To help customers find the information they need from the various resources we hold.

Responsible to: Customer Assessment and Resource Officer

Responsible for:
1. Maintaining the supply of information documentation held at the Information Resource Centre
2. Meeting and greeting visitors to the Information Resource Centre
3. Assisting visitors in identifying the correct information they need and signposting them in the right direction

Main tasks:
• Work as part of a team and liaise closely with other staff and volunteers.
• Answer telephone calls and take messages.
• Take part in individual and team training.
• Help keep leaflets and information up-to-date
• Inputting data to help monitoring of needs.
• General housekeeping of the Information Resource Centre
• Comply with all Age Concern Sheffield policies relating to volunteers.
• Any other duties as may arise from time to time subject to discussion with the Customer Assessment and Resource Officer.

Location:
Age Concern Sheffield Information Resource Centre; 44 Castle Square, Sheffield, S1 2GF.

Previous experience:
No specific previous experience or qualifications are required in order to become an ACS Volunteer Information Provider however you will need to have:
• Basic literacy and numeracy skills
• An understanding and respect for client confidentiality
• Basic computer skills
• A flexible and co-operative response to working as a team
• The ability to contribute to shared learning with other team members
• A willingness to learn
• An understanding of the needs of older people

Training:
All volunteer Information Providers will receive the following training as a minimum:
• Age Concern Sheffield general volunteer induction.
• Information Resource Centre specific induction

Person specification:
• Good communication skills
• Patience and tact
• Reliability
• Ability to work with minimum supervision
• Ability to attend quarterly supervision sessions

Hours of work: Flexible – minimum requirement 3 hours at a time. To be agreed with each applicant.
